IHR Winter Conference 2018: Home: New Histories of Living

This conference will host pathbreaking research exploring the ways the home has been thought about, utilized and lived within throughout history.

These perspectives open the shutters on domesticity, by showing how patterns of homemaking can reshape our conceptions of kinship, consumption and the everyday.

'V&A: a museum of the home and the world'

Tristram Hunt

On 7 February 2018, Dr Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, will give the 2018 IHR Historical Research lecture, sponsored by Wiley.

The lecture will explore the V&A’s founding commitment to design, education and industry that has forged an enduring connection to domesticity and the home. This lasting vision of 'art for all' continues to shape the V&A’s world-class collection today.

Gerald Aylmer Seminar 2018- Diversity amongst the documents? The representation of BAME communities within the UK’s archives

Researching and writing inclusive histories that capture the full spectrum of British history demands the creation, cataloguing and use of diverse archives.

Focusing on archives that chronicle Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) lives, institutions and initiatives, the Gerald Aylmer Seminar 2018 will explore how these communities are represented within local UK archives by bringing together leading archivists and historians in discussion and debate.

Questions will include how have archives captured social, cultural and political change? How do we ensure that modern-day social and demographic development is represented? And what has been the impact of collections and collecting on the historical profession?
