His teaching career has been spent in Oxford where he was a Fellow of St. Peter’s College and where he taught modern British and American History. He has published books on the history of Victorian social science and the history of workers’ education in Britain, and most recently, a biography of the political thinker and historian R. H. Tawney. He comes to the IHR after 10 years as the Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography since its publication in 2004. He has been followed into the editor’s chair by another former Director of the IHR, Professor Sir David Cannadine.
