IHR Film Evening, 4 April 2017 – Letters from Baghdad

The Friends of the IHR, in collaboration with the British Institute for the Study of Iraq (Gertrude Bell Memorial), present a screening of Letters from Baghdad: The extraordinary life and times of Gertrude Bell, a 2016 documentary by Sabine Krayenbühul and Zeva Oelbaum, with Tilda Swinton as Gertrude Bell.

Letters from Baghdad tells the dramatic story of Gertrude Bell, the most powerful woman in the British Empire in her day. She shaped the destiny of Iraq after World War I in ways that still reverberate today. More influential than her friend and colleague Lawrence of Arabia, why has she been written out of the history she helped make?
