Space and Power in the New Palace of Westminster
I studied History at the University of East Anglia and completed a Master's degree at the University of Edinburgh in Modern British and Irish history. My previous research has focused on electoral politics and the development of party in both the House of Commons and the constituencies.
My current research project is the result of a collaborative PhD studentship between the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust, which focuses on the Palace of Westminster following the fire of 1834. The project aims to investigate the links between the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster and the changes that occurred in political practices and the political system. At the heart of the study will be the relationship between pageantry and ceremony within the newly constructed Houses of Parliament, and the ways in which the buildings accommodated, and in many cases facilitated, the changing procedure, practices and functions of the imperial parliament.
