Stijn Van Rossem, John Carter Brown Fellow in the History of the Book

Before joining the IHR, I held teaching positions at the University of Antwerp (Literature of Modernity) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Art History). I am a visiting professor at the School of Arts in Ghent, where I teach courses on the history and theory of graphic design. In addition, I am a visiting professor in book history at the Plantin Typographic Institute in Antwerp and in 2013 I was director of the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in Brussels.

I graduated from KU Leuven with Masters degrees in History and Education, and in 2014, I completed my PhD in History at the University of Antwerp with a dissertation on the publishing strategies of the Verdussen family, printers in Antwerp from 1589 to 1689, for which I received the Menno Hertzberger Encouragement Award in 2015. In 2014, I had the honour to chair the international conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing held in Antwerp. Last year I was invited to do research at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University (Rhode Island) as the Reese/John Alden Memorial Fellowship.
