Senior fellowships
Honorary Fellows
Honorary Fellowships recognise outstanding achievement in the promotion of history, scholarship, research and/or academic leadership over a considerable period of time. Honorary Fellowships can also be awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution as staff members to the Institute of Historical Research. Honorary fellowships are therefore not confined to academic members of staff. Fellowships are offered by the Director subject to the approval of the Institute’s Advisory Council. Honorary Fellowships are for life. Award is by nomination.
Senior Research Fellows
The IHR Senior Fellowship exists to promote the understanding and interpretation of history in all its variety and across all periods. Fellowships are offered by the Director subject to the approval of the Institute’s Advisory Council to candidates who have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement in historical research. An IHR fellow is likely to have proven scholarship through a strong publication record in historical research. Preference may be given to scholars currently engaged in research which is associated with one of the Institute’s three research centres. Additionally they will be able to show how their work will benefit from using IHR resources. Candidates are unlikely to have any other academic affiliation and will need to demonstrate how they will benefit from an association with the IHR. Senior Research Fellows will be expected to provide reports on the progress of their research whilst associated with the Institute. Furthermore it is expected that they will make a contribution to two or more of the following; attend conferences, be ambassadors for the Institute, encourage and foster the work of junior fellows and other early in career researchers, give seminar papers, carry out research training. All Senior Research Fellows are invited to attend fundraising and designated School and Institute Fellow events. In return Fellows will have full access to the Institute, its facilities and resources and discounted events programme and training courses. The positions are non-stipendiary. Office space in the IHR is limited but Fellows may be able to have access to facilities in the School of Advanced Study. The title Senior Research Fellow can be held for a maximum of 3 years before appraisal and renewal. Applications for a Senior Research Fellowship should be made directly in writing to the Director of the IHR. They should include a current CV, a statement of research interests and an explanation of why the applicant requires the resources of the IHR, and the names and contact addresses of two academic referees.
Current Senior Research Fellows
Associate Fellows
An Associate Fellow is likely to be a full-time academic researcher who is not affiliated to a University or similar academic organisation. They will normally hold a PhD qualification in history and have appropriate experience of scholarship in historical research. They will be expected to interact with the activities of the IHR and preference may be given to applicants whose research interests are related to the IHR’s current research centres and projects. Associate Fellowships are offered by the Director subject to the approval of the Institute’s Advisory Council. They are non-stipendiary and office facilities are not provided. The duration of the fellowship will be three years in the first instance and can be renewed. At the end of the three year term the holder will be required to submit a report. Applications for an Associate Fellowship should be made directly in writing to the Director of the IHR. They should include a current CV, a statement of research interests and an explanation of why the applicant requires the resources of the IHR, and the names and contact addresses of two academic referees. Applications may be considered on behalf of groups of such researchers.
Visiting Fellows
Visiting Fellowships are offered to bona fide overseas scholars for a period of up to 12 months. Applicants should have a PhD and an appropriate record of scholarship and publications. Scholars should be able to show why their project requires the support of the IHR, how they will contribute to the activities of the IHR, and they should be supported by at least one UK-based referee. These fellowships are non-stipendiary and non-residential and the IHR is normally unable to provide office accommodation Applications for Visiting Fellowships should be made directly in writing to the Director of the IHR. They should include a current CV, a statement of research interests, an explanation of why the applicant requires the resources of the IHR and indication of the duration of fellowship required, and the names and contact addresses of two academic referees, one of whom should be UK-based.
