James Lees-Milne was a pivotal figure who helped pave the way for country house owners to donate properties to the National Trust free of death duties. Richard Wheeler is National Specialist in Garden History at the National Trust, based at Hughenden Manor in Buckinghamshire; recent projects include the restoration of the eighteenth century landscape garden at Stowe.
