How do film-makers capture the past on the big screen? Is it possible to be historically accurate without pandering to market forces? These are just two of the questions posed by this inaugural season that will showcase genres ranging from classical theatre to opera, documentary and modern cinema. These four films will be introduced and discussed by historians from the Department of History.

Crises have been common in the history of Central and Eastern Europe. The term crisis implies that a particular order, whether financial, social or political is thrown into a state of flux. The resultant instability usually forces those affected to react to the disturbance and reassert a sense of equilibrium. By unravelling the operation of social and political mechanisms that are normally taken for granted, crises give rise to a number of questions: Were crises preceded by a generally accepted order? How did individuals confronted with a crisis react to the new state of affairs?

The British Commission for Maritime History's (BCMH) New Researchers in Maritime History conference is an established forum for those that have recently become engaged in research in maritime history or related disciplines to meet other new and established scholars and to present a paper in a supportive environment. The BCMH is the British branch of the International Commission for Maritime History, which was founded in 1965 as a constituent of the International Congress of Historical Sciences.

This conference explores the role of plebeians in the colonial and commercial expansion across the world from c.1660-1820. Inspired by the themes of Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker’s The Many Headed Hydra (2000) the papers will explore the book’s central themes in the light of new research, as well as taking it into new areas. The role of seas and ships, armies and navies, and commercial interests in creating and regulating a mobile, multi-ethnic workforce will be explored.

Liberalism is not pacifism. Loosely-speaking liberal states - states that attach importance, at least internally, to individual autonomy - have frequently been willing to use military force; they have also, on occasion, fought aggressive wars of choice. But liberal ideology and practice are not at ease with military adventures: war of its very nature involves attacks on life; it usually requires some kind of trade-off between security and liberty; and it encourages a warrior ethos that draws upon non-liberal motivations.
