Revealing Records II: Postgraduate Conference for Medievalists

Event type:
Conference
Date:
28 May 2010

King’s College London

The second one-day AHRC / KCL funded Revealing Records postgraduate conference for medievalists will be held on Friday 28 May 2010

Records and manuscripts are the lifeblood of medieval research, but they can be difficult to access and assess. The ideas and attitudes of those who created the extant documents, and the language and form in which they are written, pose practical and intellectual challenges.  The morning session, featuring a keynote talk by Professor Jinty Nelson (KCL) and six postgraduate papers, will consider the challenges of reading medieval records; issues to be addressed include authorship & audience, and language & translation.  The afternoon session, featuring a keynote talk by Professor David d’Avray (UCL) and six further postgraduate papers, will consider the purpose of medieval records; issues to be addressed here include utility & purpose, and preservation & transmission.  Professor Michael Clanchy (IHR) will give the closing address.

RRII will be of interest to both current doctoral students and those MA students who are considering undertaking doctoral research.  Registration, which includes lunch and other refreshments, costs £10.  Please send contact details (including email) with a cheque payable to ‘King’s College London’, to Julie Mumby, Department of History, King’s College London, Strand, London, WC2R 2LS by 1 May 2010.
