Conference on Modern British History

Event type:
Conference
Date:
22 June 2010 - 23 June 2010

Following the success of the conferences held at the University of Strathclyde in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the Modern British History Network will host a fourth major Conference on Modern British History at the University of St Andrews on 22-23 June 2010. The event is particularly aimed at members of all the Scottish universities and the northern English universities although all historians are very welcome.  Previous conferences have attracted delegates from across the UK and from overseas.

Proposals for papers or registration to attend the event are now invited from researchers working on all aspects of modern British history. The conference aims to represent work covering the whole period since the late eighteenth century with topics in political, economic, social, cultural, religious and intellectual history. Proposals should be submitted by 30 April 2010 to James Nott (contact details below). Over two days there will be space for several main papers from senior academics and short papers by other academics and postgraduates, who are equally welcome to speak. We are able to offer some bursaries to Scottish-based postgraduate students.  Attached are a letter giving some further information and a ‘poster’ advertisement, together with a registration form and an application form for PG bursaries.

Our confirmed keynote speakers this year are:

  • Professor Bob Morris (University of Edinburgh)
  • Professor Jeffrey Richards (University of Lancaster)
  • Professor Penny Summerfield (University of Manchester).

The conference is part of the Modern British History Network, established in 2007 at the Universities of Strathclyde and Stirling, but the Network is now expanding and this year we are pleased to be holding the conference at St Andrews. The Network aims to serve as a means of communication and a focal point for those working in the field of modern British history, supporting both postgraduates and established scholars in new collaborative research projects. The Network is supported by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.  Please see the Network’s website for information on this conference and other activities: www.mbhn.org.uk.
