Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section

General Guide

18: INSTITUTIONS (ii) Livery companies and related organisations

Livery companies evolved from the medieval guilds or fraternities of the City of London. These were religious and social in origin, but many also acquired an economic function by forming links with and eventually monopolising a particular craft or trade in the City. They became known as livery companies because of the distinguishing special costumes, or livery, worn by some or all of their members.

Surviving records of the medieval guilds and fraternities are listed in Section 18 (i) above. Records of company schools are also listed in Section 18 (iii), records of company almshouses in Section 18 (v) and manorial records in Section 19.

In this list, all dates are covering except those given for court, membership and financial records where significant gaps are indicated. Dates refer to the period of information given and not to the date of compilation; copies are not generally indicated. Fuller details are recorded in City Livery Companies and Related Organisations; a Guide to Their Archives in Guildhall Library (3rd. edition, 1989). Catalogues will be found in the London Subject Catalogue in the Manuscripts Section’s reading room at L37 (although these do not include material deposited from 1991 onwards), and online on the City of London Corporation’s internet pages at www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/librarycatalogue (use the “Former catalogue”).

The arrangement below is alphabetical by trade, with the full name of the company given as it appears in the online catalogue

For each company the records are arranged in seven broad subject sections, lettered A to G as follows:

A. Constitutional records

B. Court records

C. Membership records

D. Financial records

E. Trade records

F. Clerk’s records

G. Charities and estates records (with muniments of title indicated separately)

These sections correspond to those used in the Guide noted above, and to the codes used in the computer catalogue to enable users to browse the catalogues in an archival order. To look at a particular section for a particular company online you should perform a Classification search and prefix the section code with the livery company code given in brackets after the company name below. For example, if you wished to look through the catalogue of membership records for the Bakers’ Company, you would do a Classification search on LBAC. Ms numbers are not particularly useful for searching for livery company records within the online catalogue, and you are strongly advised to use the codes in the manner described above.

PLEASE NOTE that the records need to be ordered in the reading room using Ms reference numbers, e.g. Ms 31692, as the archival classification numbers are merely a device to ensure the catalogue entries for records appear in the correct order on the computer catalogue. The Ms numbers are given within each computer entry. To find the full range of manuscript numbers for each collection, do a Classification search for the archival classification number given below in bold, (e.g. LAA or LBD ) which will find the collection level description.

Further details on how to search the online catalogue are given at www.history.ac.uk/gh/libcat.htm.

For more information about livery company records see C.R.H. Cooper, "The Archives of the City of London Livery Companies and Related Organisations", in Archives, vol. XVI, no. 72, October 1984, available at the Manuscripts Section's enquiry desk, and Philippa Smith “Mysteries Unravelled”, in Ancestors, issue 51, November 2006, available in the Printed Books Section of Guildhall Library.

A detailed guide to the membership records of City livery companies is available at the Manuscripts Section’s enquiry desk and at www.history.ac.uk/gh/livintro.htm.

Brief details of all the livery companies and related organisations, and other companies and guilds, along with notes on their history, current role and relationship with the City of London Corporation, are given in The Livery Companies of the City of London (second edition, December 2001) produced by the City of London’s Public Relations Office, PO Box 270, Guildhall, London EC2P 2EJ.

Information about company archives not in Guildhall Library, and about modern or current company records, is obtainable from the respective company Clerks. A list of their addresses can be supplied free of charge by the City of London’s Public Relations Office or viewed on the Livery Companies Database hosted by the Fishmongers’ Company at www.fishhall.co.uk.
