Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section

General Guide

19: Manorial Records

The manorial records held at Guildhall Library are listed below. Many of the records form part of larger archives, e.g. those of livery companies, schools, the Diocese of London, and St Paul's Cathedral. Cross references to relevant other sections of the General Guide are given as appropriate.

Full catalogue entries will be found in our online catalogue (use the “Former catalogue”). To find the entries, do a Classification search for the Manuscript number given below in bold, adding leading zeroes if necessary to give the number five digits (e.g. Ms  01906 or Ms 12348).

If the collection consists of a single document, it will be given in the following way in this guide: Ms 1906; if the collection consists of more than one document, all the manuscript reference numbers will be given, e.g. Ms 10312, Ms 11768-9-. In order to find the entries in our online catalogue, please just enter whole numbers, one at a time, in a classification search, without a dash, e.g. “Ms 10312” or “Ms 11768” or “Ms 11769”.

Alternatively, entries can be found using a Keyword Search in our online catalogue. The name in capitals below should be input, along with the word manor, for example: “Acton manor”. This search will find all catalogue descriptions, including those of printed books and maps and plans. It will also find deeds, leases and admissions and surrenders (which are not included in the dates given below, or usually, in the Ms numbers listed).

Dates are given as covering dates and no gaps in records are shown.

Records are held elsewhere for many of the manors listed below. Where this is known, it is indicated below, but a search of the Manorial Documents Register is always advisable. There are no uncatalogued manorial records in Guildhall Library.

As well as the specific sources listed below for individual St Paul’s Cathedral and London Diocesan manors, there are several series which cover a number of manors and which therefore should be consulted, if undertaking serious research on one of those manors.
