The Nineteenth Century in Print web site
brings together online collections of nineteenth century books and
periodicals from the University of Michigan, Cornell University
and the Library of Congress. The selected material has all been
published in the United States and covers education, psychology,
American history, sociology, religion, poetry and science and technology.
The site currently provided access to over 1500 books. The majority
of these were published between 1850 and 1880. Topics covered by
these books include the Civil War, slavery and abolition, religion,
self-help, self-improvement and travel. It is possible to search
the books by keyword or to browse them by subject, author or title.
Full bibliographic information is provided for each item. As well
as providing access to books the site also has full text periodicals.
There are twenty-three periodicals from Cornell University, with
further contributions from the Library of Congress currently being
incorporated into the site. The periodicals on the site include
The American Missionary, New Englander, Manufacturer and Builder,
Scientific American and Garden and Forest. The periodicals can either
be searched by keyword or browsed. Further nineteenth century books
and periodicals published in the United States will be made available
on the site.
