Gazetteer
of Markets and Fairs in England and Wales to 1516
http://www.ihrinfo.ac.uk/cmh/gaz/gazweb1.html
This web site provides
access to information about markets and fairs in medieval England
and Wales. This is the first comprehensive national survey of its
kind. The project took place at the Centre for Metropolitan History
with funding from the Economic and Social Research Council and additional
funding from English Heritage, the Aurelius Trust, and the Guildhall
Library. The gazetteer was produced by systematically working through
a range of sources to provide as much information as possible about
each market and fair, as well as background details on the places
where they were held. This information is presented on the web site
alphabetically by place name and alphabetically by place name by
county (or country in the case of Wales). The site has a glossary
of terms and a list of abbreviations. Help on how to use the gazetteer
is available in the form of a comprehensive introduction and information
on how to read gazetteer entries. More general details of the project
are also provided.
