History Today was the first illustrated magazine in Britain to attempt to bring serious history to a mass market. It was founded by the publisher Brendan Bracken in 1951, and since then has successfully combined historical scholarship and higher journalism in an attempt to appeal to those interested in history who might be outside academia. During its evolution it has reflected trends within the discipline, such as the emergence of a greater interest in world history, and has also sought collaboriations with similar magazines in other countries. It has recently been challenged in the popular history market by the emergence of the BBC History Magazine.
