Space, place and identity in media representations of northern England
The PhD student will be based in the Film and Media Studies research grouping in the School of Humanities & Social Science, and will work on one of two topics.
This PhD will investigate the relation between space, place and identity as represented in media forms and will focus on representation of northern England. We particularly welcome studies of how the North is represented in either television or music that demonstrate original approaches to this topic. The study should also have a relatively modern focus and deal with representations since 1980. It is noted that the North is currently undergoing considerable change as the concept of a ‘northern powerhouse’ provides a developmental narrative for the region.
Archive material and relevant data will be researched along with interviews with relevant personnel. Supervisor: Dr Peter Atkinson and Archive material and relevant data will be subject to research along with interviews with relevant personnel. Supervisor: Dr Peter Atkinson and Prof. Ewa Mazierska.
