Armagh Robinson Library is seeking a new Keeper, to raise its profile and professional standing and to lead its renovation and development.
Armagh Robinson Library was founded in 1771, and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1773 ‘for Settling and Preserving a Public Library in the City of Armagh for Ever’. Its collections consist of manuscripts, printed works, prints, sulphur gems, medals, coins and antiquities. Its mission is, ‘‘To safeguard and share the treasures of the past for the enjoyment, enrichment and enlightenment of the city and the world forever’.
Housed in its original Georgian Grade ‘A’ listed building, the Library is also an Accredited Museum and a four-star graded visitor attraction within Tourism Northern Ireland’s Quality Assurance Scheme. It has an associated museum at No 5 Vicars’ Hill. Its staff team welcome a wide range of visitors, including scholars and researchers, schools, specialist interest groups and community groups, as well as tourists and passing visitors.
Armagh Robinson Library is one of the great heritage libraries of Ireland, the oldest in Northern Ireland. ‘Keeper’ is the title given to the manager of the Library in its Act of Parliament. This is a unique opportunity for someone with the background, commitment and enthusiasm to lead the Library, deliver its mission, manage its resources, and shape its future development. As it approaches is 250th anniversary, the post-holder will be particularly well-placed to make a difference to the Library’s sustainability, to the management of its collections, and to its engagement with people and communities. The post will initially be supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which is also providing an Endowment Grant to match, pound for pound, the fund-raising needed to secure the Keeper’s post for the future.
For a successful applicant, a two-year secondment from current employment will be considered, if requested.
