Introduction

The offices of commissioner of bankrupts were in the gift of the lord chancellor. No formal record of their appointment appears to exist. The following account is based exclusively on the lists published in directories. The first such list appears to be that printed in the The Present State of the British Court (1720), p. 153. The next is included in the 1735 edition of Chamberlayne's Magnae Britanniae Notitia. Each of the following editions of that work also contain lists: 1736, 1737, 1741, 1743, 1745, 1748 and 1755. From 1758 to 1831 the information is derived from annual publications, first the Court and City Register until 1766 and the Royal Kalendar thereafter. It is evident that the lists were not regularly updated. The information which they provide should therefore be used with caution.

The commissioners of bankrupts were grouped in lists of five. In 1720 there were six lists. By 1735 the number had risen to eight. In that year it was increased to ten. Between 1755 and 1758 it was raised to twelve, in 1781 to thirteen, in 1792 to fourteen, bringing the total of commissioners to seventy. The commissioners were abolished in 1831 (1 & 2 Will. IV, c. 56).

The lists were composed of barristers, designated 'esq.' and attorneys, designated 'gent.' In the following list commissioners should be understood to fall into the former group unless specified as 'gent.' From 1777 the directories specify the address of each commissioner.
