Hackney Coaches Commissioners 1694-1832

A provisional list compiled by J C Sainty, February 2003

Introduction

The Hackney Coaches commission was established in 1694 (5 & 6 Will. & Mar., c. 22). In June 1694 four commissioners were appointed. In the following month the number was raised to five where it remained thereafter until the abolition of the commission in 1832 (1 & 2 Will. IV, c. 22). The salaries, originally £200, were reduced to £100 in 1695. They were raised to £300 in 1812.
