Introduction

The Salt commission was established in 1702 (1 Anne c. 15). It ceased in 1730 with the discontinuation of the salt duties but was revived in 1732 when those duties were reimposed (Calendar of Treasury Books and Papers 1731-4, p. 229; 5 Geo. II, c. 6). It was abolished in 1798 (38 Geo. III c. 89). Five commissioners served with salaries of £500.
