Commissioners of Appeals in Excise 1661-c.1841

Introduction

The commission of appeals in excise was established in 1661 and is not listed in directories after 1841. Six salaried commissioners were appointed in 1661, nine in 1663, 1669 and 1673. Nine salaried and one unsalaried commissioners were appointed in 1677 and February 1679. Nine salaried and two unsalaried commissioners were appointed in March 1679. In May 1679 five salaried commissioners were appointed and this remained the establishment thereafter. The salaries, originally £200, were reduced to £165 in 1815.
