Navy Surveyor c. 1546-1667

Introduction

This office had come into existence by 1546 when its holder was granted a salary by letters patent under the great seal. Thereafter the crown granted the office itself in this fashion. Tenure was for life until 1639 and during pleasure thereafter. The patent salary was £40.
