Peerage Creations 1603-49

A provisional list compiled by J C Sainty, February 2005

Introduction

The purpose of the following list is to provide a chronological account of creations in the peerage of England from the accession of James I in 1603 to the death of Charles I in 1649. It has been conceived as an extension of the list contained in Peerage Creations 1649-1800 published by the Parliamentary Yearbook Trust (1998).

The list covers much of the same ground surveyed in Appendix No. 6 to the Report of the Deputy Keeper of Public Records, published in 1886 and entitled 'List(s) of creations of Peers ..., compiled from Original Documents in the Public Record Office - Richard III to Charles I. (1483-1646.)' In the main this list was based on the letters patent of creation enrolled on the patent rolls, where these could be identified. From 1603 to March 1643 letters patent of creation are enrolled in all but seven cases. Thereafter enrollments exist in respect of only eleven out of the remaining thirty four creations although in one instance, the marquessate of Newcastle (1643), the letters patent were enrolled out of sequence on a roll of 12 Charles II.

To supply the deficiencies of the patent rolls the Deputy Keeper's list had resort to ancillary documentation such as signed bills and warrants for the signet and privy seal which in the nature of the case could not yield precise dates of creation and, most notably, to Docquets of Letters Patent ... passed under the Great Seal of Charles I 1642-1646, ed. W.H. Black (1837) which provided details of creations made by the King at Oxford. However the Deputy Keeper's list did not avail itself of the sequence of manuscript crown office docket books extending from 1615 to 1646. These docket books, which minute the date and contents of each patent in summary form, have the merit of being compiled contemporaneously and thus provide a useful check on the enrolments on the patent roll, often made up long afterwards. Moreover, they enable precise dates of creation to be established where other evidence is lacking.

The list is designed to provide the following information:

  1. The date of creation. The year is taken to have begun on 1 January.
  2. The principal title conferred (capitalised), followed by any other titles granted in descending order of rank. [For the spelling of titles the usage of the Complete Peerage has been adopted.]
  3. The name of the grantee. Where the grantee who was a peer of Scotland or Ireland possessed a peerage of England the fact is noted.
  4. In cases where the remainder was other than to heirs male of the body of the grantee details of the remainder.
  5. The sources from which the information is derived. Listed first is the reference to the docket book, where this is available, followed by a reference to the enrolment on the patent roll, noting any instance in which the date differs from that in the docket book.
  6. An indication of instances in which the information given in the list differs from that provided by the Complete Peerage.
