The four Clerks of the Privy Seal were appointed by the crown by letters patent under the great seal from 1537. Tenure was for life until 1814 and during pleasure thereafter. In 1817 the offices were regulated by statute which required that clerks appo inted thereafter should exercise their duties in person subject to such conditions as the Treasury should prescribe (57 Geo. III, c. 63). In 1832 the Treasury was given authority to reduce the number of clerkships as it saw fit (2 & 3 Will. IV, c. 49) . Under this authority one clerkship was discontinued in 1832 on the death of Macdonald and another in 1837 on the death of Carles. The remaining two clerkships were abolished in 1851 (14 & 15 Vict., c. 82).
