Language and palaeography courses
-
Tuesdays, 11 October - 13 December 2011
This 10-week course provides an introduction to Latin grammar and vocabulary, together with practical experience in translating post-classical Latin documents. It is intended for absolute beginners and students will emerge with not only a strong grounding in the mechanics of Latin, but an understanding of the changes it underwent and the new ways it was used in medieval and early modern Europe.
-
Tuesdays, 10 January - 8 March 2012
Following on from the first course, this further develops knowledge of
the language and reading skills, but at a reasonable pace for relative
newcomers to Latin.
-
Tuesdays, 24 April - 26 June 2012
A third course, carrying on from the first two IHR Medieval and Renaissance Latin courses, to round out students’ grasp of the language and allow them to tackle more advanced Latin texts.
-
Thursdays, January - March 2012
These courses are a new initiative of the School of Advanced Study and taught by Prof Michelle P. Brown and Dr Elizabeth Danbury. They provide practical instruction in reading scripts in French, English and Latin documents from antiquity up to 1600, together with an overview of the development of writing in the West. Further information is available on the Centre for Manuscript and Print Studies's section of the IES website.
-
Tuesdays, 4 October 2011 - 15 May 2012
This course provides an introduction to the history of script from the
Roman Empire to the Renaissance and also practical instruction in
reading manuscripts and understanding the context in which they were
written. (note: this is not an IHR course, but is run by QMUL)
