History in British Education

Read the proceedings of two conferences held at the IHR:

  1. History in British Education (14–15 February 2005)

With plenary lectures by David Starkey, Sean Lang, Michael Wills MP and David Eastwood. Speakers discussed the way history is taught in schools, the way it might be taught in the future, and what should be done to safeguard its place in the national curriculum.

  2. History in Schools and Higher Education (29 September 2005)

With speakers including Angela Ruggles, Gordon Marsden MP, Jacqueline Anthony and Alan Booth. This conference was prompted by forthcoming changes in 14–19 education, and explored the links between schools and higher education.

  3. History in British Education: Issues of Progression and Assessment (25 October 2006)

The conference brought together people from the IHR, the Royal Historical Society, The Historical Association, the Subject Centre for History, Classics and Archaeology and History UK. The candidates agreed on an action plan and these are now available in a preliminary report (rtf file, 9KB; opens a new window). Please note that a full report will follow.
