2015 - Friends' Summer Outing - Sutton House
For this year's summer outing, the Friends of the IHR will be visiting Sutton House in Hackney. Built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadleir, the building has undergone numerous alterations and incarnations but survives as the oldest residential building in Hackney. Behind the red brick exterior is a marvellous example of Tudor architecture and design, featuring oak-panelled rooms and hand-carved fireplaces. The Friends are delighted to have archaeologist and historian Dr Nick Holder leading a guided tour.
After a light lunch at Sutton House (price included), Dr Holder will then lead tours of the nearby and renowned St Augustine's Tower, the only remaining structure from the 16th century parish church.
(Please note: Both tours include narrow staircases and do not have lifts.)
