Caroline Barron - PhD in History Interview

Professor Caroline Barron

Professorial Research Fellow, Royal Holloway, University of London

Professor Barron studied for a PhD between 1962 and 1970, and has been supervising doctoral candidates ever since.

"My policy was that when I wasn't certain that someone would be able to do it, or whether they had the funding, or domestic issues or other problems, what I would say would be let me supervise you informally for a year - don't register - let's see how it goes. And if it's working out well - then register. Although in a sense you're working for nothing you're saving yourself a lot of agony, because once somebody has begun a PhD it's very difficult for them to let go of it, even if it's not working out well."
