James Lees - PhD in History Interview

James Lees, Fellowships Officer, Institute of Historical Research

James Lees has been studying part-time for a PhD for the last seven years, and is currently preparing for his viva.

"I went to King's in 1997 and did the English Language and Literature BA, but I always focused a lot of my writing on historical elements in books. I found that more interesting and rewarding than a lot of the very heavy theory-based literary criticism that was on the course. I did OK, and got a 2.1, but I decided at the end of it all that I should have done history, so I decided to do a history MA, also at King's. I picked the British Imperial History MA becuase that was the one I could give the closest argument for being qualified to do, because we'd had a lot of Victorian literature in the final year of my degree course and I could make a case for there being a crossover there."
