Jen Wallis - PhD in History Interview
Jen Wallis, PhD Student, Queen Mary, University of London
Jen Wallis is currently in her first year of her PhD at Queen Mary.
"I think the most difficult thing that I found was firstly being out of higher education for three years and working. As useful as that was, it has taken me a while to get back into the habits of basic things like reading effectively and taking notes properly. Really silly things like that - but at the same time really enjoying getting back into studying. I think the most startling difference from the Master's was - because I did a taught Master's as well - things like not having a class every week where you've got to write something. So not having those regular deadlines and having to set your own. You really need to be prepared for that before you start. Speak to other people about how they organise their time. I found it really helpful when I started at Queen Mary and we had an induction session where we were given examples of how other students had organised their work, and things like that are immensely valuable"
