Research and publications
Sir John Sainty's principal research interests are twofold: administrative history with particular reference to office-holding and the listing of office-holders of English central government from the sixteenth century; and parliamentary history with particular reference to the governmental management of parliament and the history of whipping. Publications include volumes on the personnel of seven government departments 1660-1870 (Office-Holders in Modern Britain, I-VI, XI-XII (1972-6, 1997-8); 'The Secretariat of the Chief Governors of Ireland,' Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, lxxcii C 1 (1977); The Judges of England 1272-1990 (Selden Society Supplementary Series vol. 10 (1993); 'The origin of the leadership of the House of Lords,' Bulletin of the Institute of Historical Research, xlvii (1974), 53-73; and 'The evolution of the parliamentary and financial secretaryships of the treasury,' English Historical Review, xliv (1976), 566-84. He has also placed numerous provisional lists of office-holders on the Institute's website.
