Andrew Porter (Rhodes Professor, KCL, 1993-2008) was a convenor of the I&WH Seminar for over 30 years until Ill-health led to his early retirement. In this seminar four of his former PhD students (each of whom has gone on to make their own significant contribution to world and imperial history) discuss his work on the history of the British empire. They will focus their comments on two areas to the fore in Andrew Porter’s publications: the history of European mission and late 19th century imperialism in Africa. They will also reflect on the ways in which these two fields have changed since.
