This seminar will explore the ‘culture wars’ over monarchy which underpinned the Irish War of Independence. It will consider the role played by the British monarchy in the conflict, but also the way that concepts of popular monarchism, such as loyalism, and of republican anti-monarchism shaped attitudes and beliefs during the conflict. It will conclude by examining why the ‘oath of allegiance’ in the Anglo-Irish Treaty took on such cultural significance and ultimately helped trigger Civil War.
