This talk will address the instrumentalisation of crusade history by far-right individuals and groups today. It will mostly concentrate on the situation in Germany, trying to understand why the crusades have become increasingly popular among these people, even though the crusades have never been an important reference point in German identity politics. It will also address the role of academic expertise in the formation of what might be called "dangerous forms" of crusader medievalism.

All welcome- this seminar is free to attend, but booking in advance is required.
