About the speakers:

Rod Kedward is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Sussex, UK. He is the author of several books, including La Vie en Bleu: France and the French since 1900 (2005), In Search of the Maquis (1993) and Resistance in Vichy France (1978). In 1989 he was honoured by the French Government as Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques for services to French culture, and in 2011 he was promoted to Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Hanna Diamond is Professor of French History at the University of Cardiff. She is interested in people’s everyday life experiences of war and has published widely on France during the Second World War. Her books have focused on women and gender during the period and the defeat of France in 1940. She collaborates with a wide range of non-academic partners including museums. She was advisor to the Musée de la Libération de Paris in the elaboration of their new permanent exhibition which opened in 2019 and co-curated their first temporary exhibition: ‘1940: The Exodus of Parisians’ which ran in 2020. She is currently on a Leverhulme Research Fellowship working on the wartime activities of Josephine Baker.

Raphaele Balu is a research associate at the University of Manchester, where she is contributing to an AHRC project on the history of medicine in the Free French Forces during World War Two. Her research considers the perceptions, realities, and experiences of ‘irregular warfare’ during the Second World War and she is currently investigating the history of medical care within the internal French resistance. In 2019, she was awarded the prize for the best PhD in Military History by the French Ministry of Defence for her thesis “The Maquis, Free France and the Allies: History of a cooperation” (University of Caen, 2018). From October 2022 on, she will hold a postdoc position at Sorbonne University as a junior editor for the online Encyclopaedia EHNE (https://ehne.fr/fr).
