Working with the past to create histories in the present is fraught with difficulty. For many, writing history feels particularly hard right now, not least because of the current political climate, alongside threats to Higher Education as a sector both in the UK and internationally. At the same time, many of the kinds of historical research we might want to pursue pose fundamental methodological and ethical challenges.
In this one-day workshop aimed at Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers, we will explore these challenges from a diverse range of perspectives.
- How do we best collaborate and use creative approaches to involve wider communities in difficult histories (including their own)?
- How do we best deal with difficult archives and lost documents and collections?
- How do we engage ethically and productively with difficult histories (like the problem of historical violence)?
