About the Elizabeth and Conrad Russell Research Bursaries
Details on how to apply for the bursary will be available soon.
The aim of the bursaries is to enable researchers from outside London to carry out historical research in London’s libraries and archives (including, but not restricted to, the Institute of Historical Research, Lambeth Palace Library, the British Library, The National Archives at Kew, Dr Williams’ Library, and London Metropolitan Archives).
Early career researchers (postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers, independent researchers, and lecturers or researchers on fixed term contracts) will be given priority.
Successful applicants will be expected to:
- Use the IHR as a base when in London
- Participate regularly in the British History in the Seventeenth Century seminar.
- Give a paper to the seminar
Bursaries will normally be for travel, accommodation and/or research expenses (e.g. imaging costs).
Area of Research
Any aspect of British History in the ‘long’ seventeenth century. Research that places political, religious, and constitutional history into social and cultural, transnational and comparative, gendered and marginalised, and cross-disciplinary perspectives is strongly encouraged.
Amount awarded
Up to £750 (which may be awarded in full or split between more than applicant)
Early career workshop funds
The conveners of the British History in the Seventeenth Century seminar at the Institute of Historical Research, with the Department of History at the University of York, invite proposals to hold a one-day workshop on any aspect of British history during the ‘long’ seventeenth century.
Thanks to the generosity of the Conrad and Elizabeth Russell Fund, a workshop fund of up to £2,500 is available.
ECR Workshop Application Criteria
Eligibility
- Proposals are invited from early career scholars: postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers, independent researchers, and lecturers or researchers on fixed term contracts.
- Individuals on permanent (open-ended) contracts will not be eligible as the Principal Organiser (but may be included as a Co-Organiser).
- The workshop will be held at the Institute of Historical Research in the Summer Term of 2025.
Scope
Proposals that advance areas of historical research pertinent to the work of the late Conrad Russell – British political, religious, and constitutional history between the Reformation and the civil wars – are particularly welcome. Consideration of these categories from cultural and social, transnational and comparative, gendered and marginalised, and cross-disciplinary perspectives is strongly encouraged.
Preparing an application

- Your proposal should be approximately 1 side of A4.
- Suggested speakers should be included.
- Making contact with key prospective participants in advance of submission is recommended, but not required.
- Participants (speakers, chairs, and discussants) can be from any career stage, both UK and international.
- Proposals that foster collaboration between emerging and established scholars are welcome.
- The outline budget should include estimated costs for travel, accommodation, catering, and advertising.
- The organisers will develop a full costed programme after the successful proposal has been accepted.
