Introduction
The Austrian collection in the IHR library is one of our smaller collections, but it is still substantial with particularly strong holdings of sources for the Nineteenth Century. It includes a section of material for the history of the provinces, plus a comprehensive collection of periodicals. You will find the full run of Mitteilungen des Österreichischen Staatsarchivs from 1948, and Mitteilungen des Instituts für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung from 1880.
The Austrian collection is located in our onsite store. All items can be found on the catalogue and can be requested to view.
The holdings are divided into five main sections:
- Bibliography - EA.0
- Historiography and methodology - EA.1
- Sources and Secondary works - EA.2
- Periodicals - EA.9
- Austrian local history, made up by a section of multi-provincial works and eight provinces - EAP
The bibliographies and sources are further divided into four different time periods. There is a particularly strong collection at EA.293, which covers the period 1792-1918.
Due to changing boundaries in the region, some Austrian material will be found in other European collections, and in our International Relations collection. For example, one can find there Sixteenth Century despatches from the Court in Vienna.
