Portuguese History Collections

Find out more about the Portuguese History Collections in the IHR Wohl Library. We collect historical sources and guides to finding and using sources. This page shows examples from the collections.

Introduction

The Portuguese collection covers the history of this country from the early medieval period to post-Salazar Portugal. We collect published works reflecting all aspects of Portuguese history including its political, religious, and social history. Despite its small size, it is one of the most extensive collections of primary sources on Portuguese history in Britain. Due to Portugal's prominent position in Europe's global expansion and invasion after c.1400, a significant amount of material can be found in collections elsewhere including the library's collections on exploration, colonialism and the history of Brazil.
