Opening Hours

From 28 September 2020 the IHR Library is open to a limited number of readers who pre-book desks.

Please note: the IHR currently remains closed for all other activities.

During this time we continue to work remotely and to maintain as many Institute services and resources as possible.

Access to the IHR building: Library and public areas

From 28 September 2020, the IHR Library has partially reopened for readers seeking access to collections. 

Selected Library reading rooms are currently open Monday to Wednesday 11:00 - 15:00. Pre-booking of desks is essential. Information on Library access and how to book a desk is available here. Access to the Library is via the main IHR entrance, with access to Senate House via the Russell Square entrance.

Please note: aside from the Library, the IHR remains closed.

IHR staff continue to work remotely. We continue to provide as many resources and services as possible online, including events and seminars.

Planned holiday closures for 2020-21

We close on UK public holidays and Saturdays of bank holiday weekends, Easter and between Christmas and New Year. We close for one day each November for the University of London’s Foundation Day.

If your journey to the IHR is extensive please do check in case of an unexpected closure.

  • Easter 2021: Thursday 1 – Tuesday 6 April inclusive
  • Early May bank holiday 2021: Saturday 1 and Monday 3 May
  • Spring bank holiday 2021: Saturday 29 and Monday 31 May
  • Summer bank holiday 2021: Monday 30 August
