Who is Albert of Aachen? The question has vexed generations of historians, but scholars working on Aachen have ignored it almost completely. In this paper, I will show that not only Albert traceable in early 12th-century Aachen, but that he was an important local figure, annalist and forger of political documents, who, by virtue of both his talent and his family relations, rose to further prominence as an imperial chaplain, notary, diplomat and adviser of the highest calibre.
