This year's lecture will focus on the work of the 17th-century devotional poet, George Herbert. One of only two surviving manuscripts of his poetry is MS Jones B 62 in Dr Williams's Library. Why did the notebook of an Anglican poet-priest end up in a nonconformist collection? This lecture will explore what it was about Herbert's poetry that appealed to Richard Baxter, Oliver Heywood and many others in the English dissenting tradition.
