Celebrating a Centenary of Modern French History at the IHR
The Modern French History Seminar at the IHR is celebrating its 100 years. To mark the occasion we are inviting one of the seminar’s longest-standing convenors, Professor Pam Pilbeam, to reflect on the history and significance of the seminar. As one of the main purposes of the seminar has been to give postgraduate students a space to share their research, three London-based doctoral students will also share their research in a panel of papers. We hope you will join us to raise a glass to celebrate one hundred years of French history at the heart of London.
- Pamela Pilbeam is Professor Emeritus in French History at Royal Holloway. Her work focusses on the long nineteenth century in France, and some of her latest publications include Saint-Simonians in Nineteenth-Century France (Palgrave, 2014) and ‘Alfred Cobban, his writing and teaching’, in Forum: The Legacy of Alfred Cobban, French History, Volume 34, Issue 4, December 2020, pp.519-530.
- Anthony Chapman-Joy is a doctoral student at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research focusses on caricatures of the Franco-Prussian War and Commune.
- David Klemperer is a doctoral student at Queen Mary University of London. He researches interwar socialism in France.
- Atlanta Rae Neudorf is a doctoral student at Queen Mary University of London. Her research is on nineteenth-century French political exiles in London.
