A Museum for the 21st Century
Elmbridge Museum has been collecting objects which tell the story of the borough of Elmbridge in Surrey for the past 115 years. When the museum building was closed in 2015 as a result of local authority austerity cuts, the museum had to reimagine how to use its collection of c. 43,000 objects to meet the needs of its audiences, both local and further afield. Through an innovative programme of community displays, hands-on outreach workshops, volunteer engagement and digital investment, Elmbridge Museum has been able to re-envisage its service delivery and refocus to provide valuable opportunities to engage in local heritage. Join Museum Manager, Ellie Darton-Moore, to discover the successes and challenges experienced by the museum team over the past 9 years. Ellie will discuss some of the projects the museum has focused on since the closure, such as community partnerships and collections rationalisation, and will reflect on what can be learnt about museum practice in the context of an uncertain political and economic landscape.
