In this paper, Prof Frances Knight examines the life and work of two nineteenth century bishops, Alfred Ollivant of Llandaff (1798-1882) and Connop Thirwall of St Davids (1797-1875). Both were strong and distinctive characters who framed and developed Welsh identity during their episcopates.
Professor Frances Knight is emeritus professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Nottingham and is author of among other books Ebenezer Howard: Inventor of the Garden City (Oxford University Press, 2023); The Welsh Church from Reformation to Disestablishment 1603-1920 (University of Wales Press, 2007), and co-editor of Religion, identity and conflict in Britain: from the Restoration to the twentieth century: essays in honour of Keith Robbins (Ashgate 2013)
This session is co-hosted by the IHR’s Centre for the History of People, Place, and Community; Oxford Brookes University; and University of Wales Trinity Saint David. It is part of the IHR’s People, Place, and Community seminar series and the Welsh Ecclesiastical History Seminar series.
