15:00 - 16:30 | Workshop 1: Before, During and After the PhD Viva
This workshop will explain the process and purpose of the viva and outcomes. It is led by Professor William Philpott, an experienced examiner and former doctoral programme director, with contributions from those who have successfully been awarded their doctorates. It will look at the examiners’ selection and aims, the conduct and potential outcomes of the viva, and give tips for proper preparation and getting the most out of the viva exam. The workshop will be of particular help to those in their second or third years who are writing-up, but also of interest to students approaching the upgrade viva.
16:30 - 18:00 | Workshop 2: Pitching to the Public: A TV History and Podcasting Workshop
Led by Dr Zack White, this workshop will give opportunities to craft a documentary concept, have a go at presenting and practicing demystifying the academic for a public audience. Dr White has extensive relevant experience and will offer hints and tips from four years of active public engagement.

The Three Minute Military Thesis Competition where successful applicants will present their research topic and findings live in a passionate, engaging way in under 3 minutes with one slide to an audience of experts, students and members of the public with a general interest in history.
