Facing the threat of looting and forced contribution in the 1630s, wealthy families in Southern Germany sometimes resorted to hiding their most cherished possessions, which included personal adornments and silver plate. This paper looks at three such treasure hoards that were rediscovered in Bavaria in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What can these small collections of spoons, cups, girdles, and amulets reveal about their depositors and the experience of wartime emergency in early modernity?

Allison Stielau is Lecturer in the History of Early Modern Art at UCL
