In this seminar talk we will be discussing the women of Beowulf through the lens of popular culture, and specifically in comic books and film. The purpose of this analysis is to better understand the role of the women that appear in the poem and yet often get little more than their 5 minutes of glory despite the deep importance of their actions. As we shall see in the popular culture sources, the women of Beowulf are crucial to understanding the world where this story takes places. Furthermore, these role models highlight important aspects about women in the early middle ages that help us understand the sociological and historical context in a different light.

Lillian Céspedes González obtained her PhD from the University of Winchester in 2020 with a thesis on ‘An examination of the representations of medieval Norse women and their modern depictions in visual media.’
