Writing a history of Christianity in Wales before the Normans: challenges and opportunities

Drawing on his experience in writing A History of Christianity in Wales (University of Wales Press, 2022), Professor Barry Lewis will reflect on the ways in which pre-Norman history of Wales has been written and the methodological problems for scholars working in this field.
Barry Lewis studied Modern and Mediaeval Languages at the University of Cambridge undertaking a Master’s degree there in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic in 1998–9. From 1999 to 2004 he was a doctoral student in the Department of Welsh, University of Wales, Aberystwyth. In 2001 he was appointed Research Fellow in the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in Aberystwyth. He worked on three projects: ‘Poets of the Nobility’, ‘Guto’r Glyn’ and ‘The Cult of Saints in Wales: Medieval Welsh-Language Sources and their Transmission’. He joined the School of Celtic Studies in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in November 2014.
This session is co-hosted by the IHR’s Centre for the History of People, Place, and Community; Oxford Brookes University; and University of Wales Trinity Saint David. It is part of the IHR’s People, Place, and Community seminar series and the Welsh Ecclesiastical History Seminar series.
