Masters Internship in the Heritage Sector

Internship at Boughton House & Lamport Hall Northamptonshire A Masters study Internship has been created by the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust and Lamport Hall Preservation Trust. It is designed to assist a Masters student at the University of Leicester reading for one of the MA programmes offered by the Department of History. There will be both financial support and practical experience working in an historic house on a country estate. The aim is to improve research on the wider landed estate in rural life and the heritage sector. The internship is for one year, commencing from the Autumn 2018.

Working Hours

Two days per week during the winter, rising to three days after Easter, 9.00am to 5.30pm split between Lamport and Boughton with some additional weekend work for which time off in lieu will be given.


  • The Intern must be adaptable and willing to 'pitch in' and work at all levels. Duties will include:
  • Opening the house to the public
  • Taking tours round the house
  • Visitor interpretation projects
  • Catering for small groups
  • Selling tickets for events
  • Corporate functions
  • Fairs, events and weddings
  • Marketing and market research
  • Estate Office support
  • Advertising
  • Archiving
  • General office administration including: Telephone and public enquiries, some financial work, basic statistics
  • Other duties will be at the discretion of the two Trusts


The intern will be provided with a private bedroom in Flat 3 at Lamport Hall. The sitting room, kitchen and bathroom will be shared with another student. This accommodation is free of rent, council tax and has free background heating and broadband. Electricity and telephone calls will have to be paid for and also a TV Licence, if required.


The MA dissertation will be based on a topic of rural and/or social history, to be determined in discussion with Dr Elizabeth T Hurren. In 2018 it is likely to be an aspect of land agent's work /or the history of courtship/or an aspect of the rural land management of a large country estate.


Due to the rural location of Lamport a car is required. You will be expected to cover your own travel costs when working at Boughton.


In addition to free accommodation, a bursary of 50% of the tuition fee will be given.

Holiday Entitlement

The Intern will be allowed 7 days  holiday during the year which can be taken at any time agreed with the Executive Director. Time off in lieu will be given for any weekend work.
